Founder of Child Safety and Support (TOCSS) Foundation, Temidayo Ogan has stressed the need to prioritise the safety of children in vehicles. Speaking at the 10th anniversary of the found Ogan called or parents and guardian to ensure that children are properly fastened in safety seats.
Ogan said, the group has vigorously pursued its Child Passenger Safety (CPS) campaign in Nigeria for the past 10 years, which has largely equipped children and youths on safety procedures on roads.
She said: “The policy was for every child under the age of four to be properly strap in appropriate car seat. “When we started TOCSS Foundation people were not talking about car seat in Nigeria, but now FRSC is promoting it. So far, there is awareness and a strict compliance. People are aware and making effort to use it appropriately,”
“When people go behind the wheel, they engage in deadly activities. We have realised that when there is a crash the impact at the point of crash is subjected to what extent injury will be sustained.
Ogan added: “Part of our achievement is the Road Safety Club, which we started in 2007. We talked to Parents Teachers Association, we do child passenger safety education training for school bus driver and we are seeing the impact.”
The Executive Director of National Road Safety Commission, Ghana, May Obiri-Yeboah said it was an undeniable fact that road transport as primary mode of transportation plays an integral part in the socio-economic development of the region.
She said: “The rapid growth in the level of motorisation threatens the global road safety situation at a worrying pace to the extent that may undermine the economic and social development of our countries”
She added that 500 children lose their lives through road traffic crashes globally. Obiri-yeboah urged everybody to obey traffic rules so as to stay alive to achieve their goals.
“We should strengthen the capacity of key agencies of our countries to coordinate and implement their road safety activities. We must be proactive and advocate to awaken the road safety consciousness of every man and woman,” she advised.
