lagosians will have a rare opportunity to watch some 10 top Nollywood films today ( Friday) , as a part of the ongoing Lagos @ 50 celebration.
They are Kunle Afolayan ’ s new film , Roti , which will premiere at the IMAX Cinema in Lekki.
The state Governor, Mr . Akinwunmi Ambode , is expected to be among the dignitaries and other stakeholders that will see the work.
Multiple award- winning 76 , which dramatises the 1976 coup in which General Murtala Muhammed was assassinated, will also be screened , while Tunde Kelani ’ s movie , Maami , adapted from a publication by Professor Femi Osofisan , will also be screened in Epe .
Another acclaimed film on the list is The Wedding Party , produced by Mo Abudu alongside other investors. The movie that comically celebrates an elite wedding is particularly returning to popular view at an auspicious moment and will be in Badagry .
The artistes that played its lead characters , Banky W and Adesua Etomi , only on Wednesday announced that they were engaged – truly engaged beyond the acting they put up in the film that also stars Sola Sobowale , Ireti Doyle , Ali Baba, Afeez Oyetoro , among other stars .
Ace comedian , Ayo Makun , also have a stake in the Lagos @ 50 project. The reason is that his massively - selling film , A Trip to Jamaica , will be screened in Ikeja .
Another big one that Lagosians will have the advantage to watch is Steve Gukas - directed 93 Days , a dramatisation of Nigeria ’ s battle against Ebola, the heroine of which was Stella Adadevoh, whose role is played by Bimbo Akintola . It will be shown in Epe .
With the harvest of films to be shown today , the organising committee said Lagos was re - asserting itself as the primary market for films and other forms of entertainment in Nigeria and Africa at large .
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr . Steve Ayorinde, also noted that the Ambode government believed in giving support and opportunity to film - makers as it loved to do with other art and cultural workers .
“ You will recall that , last year, the government took 10 films to the Toronto Film Festival where Lagos was honoured as a major film state . You also recall that the government is working on new theatres/ cinemas across the five divisions in the state . On the one hand, we are also using the Friday’ s multiple screenings in different areas of the state as a prelude to the experience that Lagosians will be having when the theatres come on board . Also , we are conscious of the fact that we need to give those places that are not directly hosting any of the theatres or cinemas an opportunity to have a feel of the top films. ”
